The Story

Three State Heritage-listed colonial houses from 1892 on the slope of Monument Hill, overlooking Fremantle and the Indian Ocean. Six rooms named for local history — the Fothergill family's scandals, marriages, heroic rescues, and deaths are all documented on separate pages of the website, which tells you everything about the level of care here. Bathrooms designed by a marine architect and built from Tasmanian oak. Art in every room — paintings, glass, sculpture, pottery — and breakfast served on plates thrown by a local ceramicist. A 1952 Morris Minor convertible still takes guests into town. Opposite the World Heritage prison. Afternoon tea and cake daily. The website looks like it was built in 2003. The hospitality hasn't aged a day.
