The Story
The Government Savings Bank of NSW built this Oxford Street branch in 1914 to designs by H E Ross & Rowe. It became a Commonwealth Bank branch when the two merged during the Depression in 1931, had its façade reconstructed in 1935 after road widening, and was sold in 1996 — though the bank stayed on as tenant until 2013. Architects Orwell & Peter Phillips converted it between 2015 and 2017, revealing the pressed metal ceilings in the former banking chamber (now reception) and adding a three-storey rear wing of new rooms. Three of the Heritage rooms and suites occupy the former bank manager's first-floor residence.
